MATCHED by Ally Condie

In the Society, Officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.

Cassia has always trusted their choices. It's hardly any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one . . . until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black.

Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she's known and a path no one else has ever dared follow - between perfection and passion.

The Afterglow

When I finished this book, I almost went back to page one so I could read the whole thing again.

Beautifully written, MATCHED reminded me of THE GIVER meets THE HUNGER GAMES.

The plot, which centers around a wannabe-Utopian Society that controls its inhabitants every move, has its obvious echoes of THE GIVER (actually, I think this may have been a point of contention with some readers, but I did not feel like it was a rip-off or anything).

And the main character, Cassia, feels like she could be a sister to Katniss Everdeen. If nothing else, the two would absolutely be best friends. In fact, if Katniss had enlisted Cassia's help to bring down the Capitol, there probably would have been a lot less bloodshed.

But I digress.

I loved, loved, loved this book. Condie is a master writer, weaving words together in such a way that the reader slips through the story with seemingly no effort at all. And the concept of a Society like the one in the book, while at first glance far-fetched, becomes more horrifyingly possible the further you get into the story.

All in all, a great book and highly recommended! Sequel comes out in November!

  1. I like this book. When I first read it, I felt it was a little slow, the pacing and the build of tension took their time. But looking back, I think I was on Hunger Games hangover, and no book is going to live up to the pacing or tension of that story.

And I think Matched was written just as it should be. It's more of a beautiful, subtle tale, and the writing fit with that.
